Following the news that Marlow’s Waitrose on Chapel Street is due to close, we asked our readers what should replace the popular supermarket.

In total, seven shops across the UK will shut down with three sites in Bromley, Oadby, and Wollaton having been sold to Lidl, while a fourth in Sandhurst is being acquired by an unnamed party.

An additional three shops in Marlow, Stevenage, and at the Waterside British Airways headquarters are also closing.

There has been no official confirmation of anyone taking over the lease in Marlow, and the shop being replaced by Lidl is currently unlikely.

We asked readers what they wanted to see open in its place.

Keith James Green said: “Iceland. Would be nice but doubt it will be a food shop,” whilst Steve Lodge said: “Move the Doctors Surgery to the site, plenty of space, ample parking nearby.”

There was a variety of ideas from our readers which ranged from other supermarkets, car parking spaces and pubs, with Dave Rogers suggesting the space should be used as a new site for a Wetherspoons.

However, whilst everyone was expressing their opinions, Tony Ellis told the Bucks Free Press: “It's a sign of the times if a Waitrose is closing.

“It means that Marlow is struggling financially - recession never went away, politicians just said it did but that means nothing to the average man on the street.”

A lot of readers also believe that the new space should be transformed into a fast food restaurant.

McDonald's is one of the names that has been mentioned.

Earlier this year, Waitrose's owner the John Lewis Partnership slashed its staff bonus for the sixth consecutive year as the retail giant revealed a slump in annual profits.
