Hundreds of pounds was raised for a Leukaemia charity following a successful tabletop sale in Marlow.

Leukaemia CARE, who were founded on September 11, 1969, saw £343 get raised on their behalf after numerous items such as toys, books, babywear and greeting cards were sold in Higginson Park on Bank Holiday Monday.

Diane Murray, who is Leukaemia CARE’s area secretary told the Bucks Free Press: “My aim is to bring awareness because lots of people still don’t know how to deal when themselves or one of their loved ones are diagnosed with Leukaemia.

“It is a horrible illness where there is currently no cure, so we’re doing everything we can to help those who have it, get the best possible support and treatment.

“It’s strange to think that it usually seems to get people who don’t smoke, drink and are relatively healthy - it’s very scary to think about.

“When you get told that you have Leukaemia, your life just stops as you think about all the worst things possible.

“But we’re trying our best to help those, as we will continue to do so.”

There are four different types of leukaemia: acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML), acute lymphocytic leukaemia (ALL) and Chronic lymphocytic (CLL).

Figures from Cancer Research revealed that there were 9,918 new cases of leukaemia between 2014 to 2016, with there being 4,762 related deaths from the illness in 2016.

However, over the last decade, leukaemia mortality rates have decreased by more than a seventh in the UK.

Another tabletop sale to raise money for Leukaemia CARE will take place on September 8 at Higginson Park.
