The councillor father of an MP from Buckinghamshire who quit the Conservatives today to join the Liberal Democrats has refused to comment on his son’s extraordinary move – which has wiped out Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s majority.

Phillip Lee produced a sensational twist in the House of Commons this afternoon, as he incredibly defected from the Conservative Party to join the Liberal Democrats - midway through a speech delivered by PM Boris Johnson.

The newly elected PM was talking about the G7 conference when the 48-year-old from Taplow left his seat and sat down with the Lib Dems.

This means that Boris Johnson's government has no working majority.

Mr Lee’s father, Tony Lee, who is a Conservative member for Wycombe District Council, was contacted by the Bucks Free Press for a comment on his son’s move, but he declined to say anything.

Tony Lee represents the Bourne End cum Hedsor ward.

Phillip Lee’s departure from the Tories arrives eight weeks before the UK are to officially leave the European Union.

The UK is set to leave the union on October 31.
