"Thousands" of maggots invaded a block of flats in High Wycombe after the bins were not collected for three weeks.

Margaret Nicholson said hundreds of fly larvae were entering her block of flats in Peatey Court "every few minutes" earlier this month because their bins had been left uncollected for a number of weeks despite complaints to Wycombe District Council.

Ms Nicholson told the Bucks Free Press the situation was "revolting", adding: "I live on the ground floor with my five-year-old daughter and the maggots have come through our fire door and are one millimetre from our internal door. It's disgusting and no one is doing anything about it."

After calling the council, Ms Nicholson was apparently told to call Serco, who are responsible for waste collection, who "promised" they would send someone round on August 31 but they did not turn up.

A spokesman for Wycombe District Council said that Serco had sent crews back on September 3 as soon as they were alerted to the situation but some blocks of flats in the Princes Gate complex had still not been collected from.

They said: "Serco sent crews back on Tuesday [September 3] as soon as we were alerted to this situation. Refuse had not been collected from several sites within the Princes Gate complex, including Peaty Court, Priestley Court, Melissa Court, Ash Down Court and Grove Gardens.

"This was followed up with an officer visit the same day. They reported that two of the developments had still not been cleared and Serco returned to collect waste from Melissa Court and Grove Gardens.

"We extend our apology to Ms Nicholson and the other residents for the inconvenience and frustration experienced. Our waste team are in discussion with Serco and will do everything possible to ensure service standards are raised to the expected level."
