SWINDON’S MPs have reacted with frustration to the Government losing a crunch Commons Brexit vote.
In a special Saturday sitting, the Commons voted by 322 to 306, a majority of 16, in favour of the amendment by the former Cabinet minister Sir Oliver Letwin withholding approval until legislation to implement the deal is in place.
Robert Buckland, South Swindon MP and Justice Secretary, said: “Parliament missed a huge opportunity to get Brexit sorted today.
“It was a close vote, so we will press ahead in the next few days with further key votes on the necessary laws to make Brexit happen by the end of the month.”
Justin Tomlinson, North Swindon MP and Disabilities Minister, added: “The public will rightly be angry with Corbyn's woefully out of touch, anti-democratic attempts to frustrate Brexit further.
“However, thankfully it is clear the momentum is swinging behind breaking the deadlock.
“The PM will bring forward the Withdrawal Bill this week and we expect there to finally be a majority to deliver Brexit with enough Labour MPs breaking rank to respect the clear democratic will.
“The public expect Brexit to be delivered by October 31 and it will be.”
