The Tories have selected a candidate to fight for the Westminster seat currently held by Commons Speaker John Bercow.

Mr Bercow announced last month his final day in the Speaker's chair would be October 31, and he would resign as an MP when his successor is elected on November 4.

Greg Smith, who works in marketing and design, was chosen to be the Tory standard bearer in the Buckingham constituency - which covers Princes Risborough - on Sunday.

Mr Smith Tweeted: "Delighted and humbled to have been selected as the Conservative candidate for Buckingham today. Looking forward to getting the campaign started."

Traditionally, major political parties do not field candidates against a Speaker.

But relations had become so fraught between Mr Bercow and the Conservatives over Brexit that the party moved to challenge him before he announced he was quitting.

Mr Bercow was elected to Parliament as a Conservative in 1997, but gave up party affiliation on becoming Speaker in 2009.
