It will cover improvements to the library's energy efficiency - including boiler replacement, alongside upgrades to heating systems, wiring and electrics.

The library is set to close at 3pm on Saturday, November 9 and re-open 1pm on Thursday, November 28.

Councillor Karen, Reading’s lead member for Culture, Heritage and Recreation, said: "I'm really pleased we are able to put this investment into Tilehurst Library to keep the building running as efficiently as possible for the future.

"Unfortunately, due to the nature of these essential works it will mean a temporary closure to ensure the building is fit for purpose.

"We apologise for any inconvenience for library users, however, exchange dates will be extended and books can also be returned to any of the other Reading libraries or at the book drops outside library branches.

"The Library Service’s fantastic e-book, e-magazine and e-audio service is available all the time at www.reading.gov.uk/elibrary

"We know people value their local libraries, and this work is part of a wider series of improvements planned across several other library branches.

"It also closely follows after our recent £400K investment in transforming Battle Library into a community hub, so that more people can enjoy what it has to offer."

The work is part of a wider series of improvements across a number of library branches, which will all take place over the next six months.
