PEOPLE drinking alcohol in public places could be fined £100 from next week.

A new ‘booze ban’ will cover large parts of Amersham and Chesham town centres after the council gave the go-ahead to a new Public Space Protection Order (PSPO)

Public spaces that caused the most concern include:

  • King George V field.
  • Lowndes Park,
  • White Hill from the White Hill centre towards the roundabout,
  • Chesham cemetery,
  • Higham Road,
  • Broad Street

Why has it been introduced?

The Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) 2019 will be implemented after Chiltern District Council became ‘satisfied on reasonable grounds’ that public alcohol consumption in the areas outlined ‘have had a detrimental effect on the quality of life of those in the locality’.

The issue went to a consultation, where mixed responses were received.

Thames Valley Police supported the inclusion of the Chesham cemetery and Meades Water Garden, Amersham-on-the-Hill and Old Amersham – after 16, 12 and 31 anti-social incidents reported as a result of alcohol-related behaviour respectively over the last three years.

How does it work?

Should someone be seen either consuming alcohol or having an unsealed container of alcohol, they may be subject to a fixed penalty notice of £100 if the drink is not surrendered.

Where does the order apply?

The areas which come under the proposal include Chesham cemetery, Amersham-on-the-Hill, Old Amersham, Seer Green, the land at Roundwood Road and the Amersham station forecourt.

Amersham Town Council also supported the inclusion of Amersham-on-the-Hill, Amersham Old Town, Hervines Park and King George V field.

Chesham Town Council supported ‘the whole town being included’, but also confirmed that they believed Lowndes Park, White Hill from the White Hill centre towards the roundabout, Chesham cemetery, Higham Road, Broad Street and the town centre should be areas of particular focus.
