THE company responsible for recycling in Waltham Forest has been bought by one of the country's biggest waste management firms.

Verdant has been taken over by Greenstar UK, an arm of Irish-based utilities company NTR.

Greenstar's managing director Ian Wakelin announced the move on Friday, saying he wants his firm to become the country's leading recycling-led waste management company.

Mr Wakelin said: "The combination of Verdant's strength in municipal collection and Greenstar's processing capabilities puts us in a unique position to compete in this market."

Verdant bosses Jon and Simon Miles, who acquired the business in 2001, will stay with the company.

The council's cabinet member for environment, Cllr Bob Belam, has endured many complaints from residents about Verdant's handing of compulsary recycling, introduced earlier this year.

He said: "We anticipate this will be a positive move for residents and look forward to meeting the new owners as early as possible to ensure we build a strong and effective working relationship."
