A member from Wycombe Labour who described Marlow as 'one of the wealthiest white middle-class towns in the country’, after the town were given a £100,000 grant has caused an angry reaction from Bucks Free Press readers.

Abigail Mattingly shared her views via Twitter and later told the Bucks Free Press: “If we want this money that seems to be floating around WDC to truly improve the lives of residents, let’s distribute it around the district and focus it where it’s truly needed: those areas with high poverty rates and foodbank usages – not where it’s just used to decorate an already prosperous town.”

However, several BFP readers expressed their anger over Ms Mattingly’s comments.

One user, Peter Cyprus said: “She just had to raise 'diversity' didn't she? These left-wing zealots are a danger to true democracy!”

Motco then added: What, pray, has the ethnic profile of Marlow got to do with the matter Ms Mattingley?

“Had the boot been on the other foot the cries of 'racist!' would have echoed from the rooftops. Isn't sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander?”

Following Ms Mattingly’s comments, Wycombe District Council revealed that £1m worth of grants were given to a number of different towns and parishes within Buckinghamshire, with Wycombe being given £450,000 to improve the town.

Pongo Patterson said: “Seems a bit strong moaning about Marlow’s £100k grant when is states HW was awarded £450k.

Whilst boucheboo67 said: “So 'white' council taxpayers don't deserve any cash spent on their area - despicable headline.

“Abigail's response is ridiculous considering Wycombe Town has been allocated £450,000.

“The town is on the list to share 1 Billion (with 50 other towns) to revitalise the high street.”

However user Dan1991 seemed to agree with Ms Mattingly’s comments.

He said: “It's all well and good to distribute the money, but it's a bit perverse for Marlow to get extra money to polish their diamonds when HW is an eyesore due to a lack of maintenance and failure to invest in the high street and Frogmoor. £1m is not going to cut it.”

However, A Cunning Linguist disagreed with Dan1991’s comment.

They said: If Wycombe residents gave a monkeys and actually did anything to improve their town without moaning and came up with a proposal, then perhaps they'd have something to show.

“How dare Ms Mattingly play the race card.”
