Buckinghamshire Army Cadet Force will be holding an open night at their High Wycombe unit on Thursday, February 20.

The open night will be held at the 2 Platoon on Rutland Street and is for anyone aged between 12 to 18-years-old.

SI Lee Hutchinson, who is Detachment Commander, at 2Plt and a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer from Bucks’ Army Cadet Force said: “We meet two nights a week and also spend weekends away throughout the year teaching them the army syllabus with lessons on valuable first aid life preserving skills, to map reading and navigation to teaching them how to crawl undetected through long grass, and build their own 'basha' to sleep in under the stars overnight.

"They also work together to solve complex command tasks as a team too.”

“It is truly satisfying to see that quiet, non-confident Cadet walk in on their first night with us to then get stuck in with their peers, make friends for life and take on board the sense of camaraderie and being a part of team that is being a Cadet.

“You watch them grow into young mature adults who truly enjoy their cadet journey with our two-week summer camp being the highlight of the year for many.

“Once new cadets have signed up, they will partake in a wide range of challenging activities such as adventurous training (kayaking, abseiling, climbing, caving, skiing and mountain biking), expeditions, first aid, navigation, military knowledge and shooting, Duke of Edinburgh Award to name just a few.

“Being a Cadet or adult staff with the Army Cadet Force can open up many opportunities for both teenagers and adults. “

The senior Cadets will be able to work towards a BTEC in STEM subjects, get taught how to become junior instructors and are given the opportunity to lead others.

The younger cadets on the other hand can take part in community events such as helping to run stalls at the Hazlemere Fete or record race times at Dorney Lake rowing club and also stand in support of our High Wycombe Mayor as the Mayor’s Cadet.

Lee added: “With more than 1,600 detachments across the UK with nearly 40,000 members, the Army Cadet Force is one of the country’s largest voluntary youth organisations.

“So, come down and take a look at what they get up to, both new cadets and any willing adults who want to think about giving up some time to be a CFAV too are welcome.”

It will start at 8pm and will finish at 9.30pm.
