The repairs to a house which was severely damaged by a sinkhole in Flackwell Heath at the start of the January are set to begin today (February 18).

The house, which is on Chapel Road, was evacuated at the start of the year after a burst water pipe near the house caused a large part of the drive to go in on itself, which then caused huge cracks to appear at the front of the property.

The seriousness of the sinkhole has caused those living in the home as well as the immediate neighbours to evacuate, and no official time scale has been given on when they can return.

One of the residents of the house which has been effected said: “We’re just waiting to see whether or not it is safe for the builders to go in before they can start the work.

“Obviously, this is not great in the slightest, but safety is very important for everyone around us.

“Once the go ahead is given by the builders, it’s going to take a few months for it to get fixed.”

It is alleged that a burst water pipe near the house caused the sinkhole to form at the start of the month, which is the second time in two years that a pipe in the same area has burst.

Following the incident on January 8, three Urban Search and Rescue vehicles along with a crew from Beaconsfield evacuated the residents in the affected house and isolated the electricity supply.

They then used a pump to remove some of the water.

A Thames Water spokesman said: "We have found alternative accommodation for the family and our priority at the moment is to make their house safe so personal items and furniture can be removed.

"Once the house has been stabilised their neighbours will be able to return home and we will then discuss with the family themselves the best way forward."
