ERCOL Furniture in Spring Gardens showed 50 new designs at this year's Open House, bringing a more contemporary look and feel to their popular Renaissance, Windsor cabinet and Chester table ranges

Higher arms and articulated backs on the Renaissance range of settees and chairs, new fabrics and glass-fronted bookcases with lighting on the Windsor cabinets have all been introduced.

The Scala range, introduced last year in maple, now has the addition of leather upholstery which will be available at selected retailers from the early summer.

"We have kept the wood the brand and the feel of Ercol," said Floris van den Broecke, Ercol's design director.

"The Renaissance range has been exceptionally well received."

The fabrics, from Osborne & Little and the Designers Guild, reflect the modern style of the furniture with floral patterns in muted red and rusts through to the highly fashionable greens and beiges. And boucl, now becoming the in thing, in oranges and greys gives a very elegant look to the furniture.

Visitors to the showroom also had the benefit of using Ercol's new Prevue draping programme which, at the click of a mouse, allows them to mix and match fabric and furniture on a computer screen.

Edward Tadros, managing director of Ercol Furniture, said: "The retailers seem to be reasonably optimistic and we are definitely busier than we were last year."
