Marlow’s very own bookshop is hoping to encourage children to read more books, as they celebrate World Book Day in style.

The Marlow Bookshop, who are based on Spittal Street, will have several books out on display which have been written by popular children’s authors, from new releases to old-fashioned classics, as those who work at the shop, want the youngsters ‘to be excited’ by the hardcopies.

World Book Day is today [Thursday, March 5].

Rae Constable, who works at the shop, said: “We work our socks off to make our children’s department look amazing and that’s our busiest part of the shop.

“We make it appealing, exciting and interesting to the children and the books are appealing, exciting and interesting for youngsters.

"The authors and designers work really hard to make the books visually exciting and appealing, by adding such aspects like wheels or flaps or noises or buttons because the best thing really is to make babies love books from a young age and be excited.

“There is so much enthusiasm around the shop as we have children waiting by the door, waiting for us to open and when we do open, they rush in and try and find the book they want.

“And that is very sweet.”

The Marlow Bookshop opened in July 2016 and with well over 1,000 books on show, Rae admitted that it would be impossible to know every single title they have in their shop.

But with all the members of staff dressed up as famous book characters and with the children’s section of the shop

Rae said: “One of the nice things about the way the books are displayed is that they are open so that the children can have a look and see for themselves what we have on offer.

“It is important that children feel the books and turn the pages themselves and that they understand that a book is a beautiful object to really enjoy, love and treasure.”

Rae also hopes that World Book Day can also inspire adults to get into reading too.

“The best way to encourage everyone to read is that books are a way for us to indulge in adventure, excitement and they take us into a different world which is very special.

“Some books can help us and some books can help us escape.

“The world can be a very scary and difficult place and books can sometimes help you out.”
