A drink driver from High Wycombe has been jailed after being involved in a caravan crash on the M5 in Devon during the coronavirus lockdown.

Dennis Ryan, 33, an Irish national living in High Wycombe, was charged with drink-driving and driving without a licence and jailed for 17 weeks following the crash near Sampford Peverell on April 8.

Devon and Cornwall Police officers were called to reports of a jack-knifed car and caravan at 1.40pm on April 8.

Mary Sheridan, 34 and also from High Wycombe, was also reportedly charged with drink-driving and is due to appear before Exeter Magistrates’ Court on May 5, police earlier said.

While police were at the scene of the crash, the car left the area and was stopped by officers a short time later.

The vehicle was then seized.

Officers say the car involved in the crash was apparently part of a convoy of cars towing caravans.

A police spokesman said: “Officers located a group of people who had stopped at the Junction 27 services on the M5 a short time later.

“Police subsequently seized a BMW car and issued a graduated fixed-penalty notice to a woman for driving without a licence and with no insurance.

“The group was given strong words of advice/education around travelling in the current pandemic, advised against this and asked to return to the location from where they had travelled.

“While at the scene, officers found an Audi S6 in the area which had been reported stolen from Norfolk.

“No driver was located and enquiries are ongoing into this matter. The car was seized.”
