As promised, some nostalgic views from Spittal Street, but these, in colour, are just a little more up to date than those in last week’s column featuring West Street.

1. The line of shops that used to adjoin the Cross Keys - Tesco; Westside Fruiterers; Countryside Frozen Foods; Townsend Furnishers; Sam Cowan Bookmakers, with the Heron House office block overhead.

2. Jane Ann Toy Shop, Le Gourmet Delicatessen, Decorite Paints and Wallpaper, plus just a bit of Robinsons’ Hardware.

3. Southern Motifs who printed t-shirts, and, reviving memories of that classic Monty Python sketch, The Cheese Shop, but no bouzouki music in the Marlow branch.

4. Chiltern Sound Records (a bit of personal nostalgia here); Barbecue Take-Away, and Unit 1 Kitchen Shop.

5. The legendary Miss Gasper’s. The oldest picture on the page, dating from her father’s time when he traded as a tobacconist and newsagent. Having inherited the shop, Miss Gasper (I never knew a Christian name) concentrated on toys, postage stamps (the top collecting hobby back then), penny drinks and ice-lollies. She was a kindly lady but always slightly stressed running a shop that was a Mecca for young kids. Chiltern Sound was built on this site in 1971 and was haunted by Miss G’s ghost.

6. Watson’s Chemist and Quickstep Shoe Repairs.

7. The Carpenter’s Arms with decorations that I would guess were for the Queen’s Jubilee.
