Nostalgia by Michael Eagleton

I added picture number one at the last minute, since I saw a “comment” on the Bucks Free Press website relating to my recent Spittal Street pictures, confirming my thoughts that many people are unaware that Marlow once had a Tesco.

In fact, a year ago I had an angry email from a lady telling me that it didn’t. I hope that the picture three weeks ago put the record straight, but here is another one just in case.

It probably does not fit the “Swinging Sixties” theme, although the open topped car is suitably trendy.

We move on with a couple of pictures from the September 1962 Carnival: Philippe Burger at the wheel of the sports car in Institute Road.

The rather ramshackle tin sheds that can be seen were behind what is now Mint Velvet, but back then was Budgen’s Stores.

These were replaced many years ago.

Last on this line: Peter Holzer, Cliff Austin, Bob Ayres and Eddie Price giving some close attention to the winner of the 1968 ‘Miss Marlow’ competition - Lynette Doe who now lives in Australia.

Regatta decorations in the High Street along with a side view of Currall’s Garage.

For many years the Corner House Café was an “egg and chips with a cup of tea” type of place but in the mid-60s adapted to changing trends by bringing in a large and shining chrome coffee machine and extravagant wall murals to attract the younger set.

Bottom line: more Esso Petrol, about six shillings (30p) a gallon if I remember correctly, at Green & Earl’s Garage in Maple Rise along with another stylish car.

A late 60s Carnival procession with a few umbrellas suggesting that the weather was being unkind, and finally, in 1966, and alongside the Rowing Club, the Mayor Brooke Furmston taps a barrel of Wethered’s finest to congratulate the works team for completing the rebuild of Marlow Bridge.

Next week: a few more pictures from this era, including some sporty vehicles.
