Nostalgia by Michael Eagleton

1. In the era before ‘stretch-limos’ became an accepted sight on the roads, this vehicle (possibly a Pontiac?) created something of a sensation in Marlow. It belonged to a successful builder, Mr Dean, who lived at Tudor Cottage in Gossmore Lane.

2. Bernard Burger in Station Road, close to his restaurant and bakery. Due to the lockdown I have missed getting his famous “Japs”, as once sampled by Terry Wogan.

3. Marlow’s “Byrd Herd” pop group off to a gig in Triumph and Sunbeam sports cars. Arm outstretched at the rear is David Chalk.

4. A scene from the 1969 film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” with the rarely seen front fascia of Thames Lawn behind James Bond’s 1969 Aston Martin DBS. Some years later this beautiful house burnt down.

5. Another Sunbeam, this one owned by Tom Moth who is next to the copper. Tom at that time worked for Duce’s and later David Brooks’ chip shop, but then opened his own take-away next to my record shop. I thought he was now in South Africa, but I am told it is Australia, and that his health is none too good.

6. A 1961 Maserati at Currall’s in the High Street, and available at £2575.

7. A night-time scene outside The Ship in West Street, with, I think, a Daimler, but then again it might be a Jaguar.

8. Problems on Bisham Hill. This was before the by-pass was built and the road to Henley was a side turning to the right.

9. No especially remarkable vehicles in this picture, but a reminder that traffic jams in the High Street are nothing new. The lorry is sign-written David R. Lee.

Most photos taken by Malcolm McIntyre-Ure, but one by Barrie Lea.
