THE county has now gone more than a week without a patient dying from coronavirus in hospital, as the UK death toll slows.

A further 108 people, who tested positive for coronavirus were announced yesterday to have died in England’s hospitals, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths there to 26,722.

Patients were aged between 29 and 99 years old, with 16 of the 108 patients (aged between 48 and 94) having no known underlying health condition.

Oxfordshire hospitals have continued to report no new fatalities from the virus, with now more than a week since the last Covid-19 at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The trust, which runs the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and Banbury’s Horton General Hospital, has recorded 177 virus deaths, with the most recent announced on May 22. Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the county’s community hospitals, has reported 22 deaths.

However, Office for National Statistics data shows that most Covid-19 deaths in Oxford are now happening outside of hospital.

Figures released last week showed of the 68 deaths provisionally registered in Oxford up to May 23, 36 were not in a hospital, with 25 in care homes.

Across the UK there have now been 39,045 coronavirus deaths, with 276,332 lab-confirmed Covid-19 cases as of 9am on Monday.

Globally confirmed cases have now passed six million, with more than 372,000 deaths.
