The National Trust deployed rangers to clear and bag up rubbish left at the top of West Wycombe hill after travellers moved on.

Travellers pitched up near St Lawrence's Church and the famous Golden Ball on Friday but had left by 6pm on Sunday.

On Sunday afternoon, West Wycombe Village Store announced it would be shutting for the rest of the afternoon until the caravans had moved on.

Although the Chiltern Countryside Ranger team at the National Trust had managed to clear up all the rubbish that was left after they had moved off the site, the car park has to remain shut until human excrement can be cleared by a specialist team.

Saying thank you to the National Trust for their hard work during an "eventful weekend", the West Wycombe Events Team added that the car park where the caravans were pitched is now secure and further security measures will be installed to prevent any further illegal encampments.

On Facebook, the events team posted: "Thankfully with there being less rubbish that expected, there is no additional requirement for volunteers to help clear up tomorrow [Monday] - just back to the usual litter picks which are very much appreciated.

"We are mindful to be aware of the areas that have been used as toilets, particularly around the hillfort.

"We have seen and heard of the wonderful support network from the community over these past few days, a sense of togetherness in these current hard times.

"It has prompted a discussion with the parish council, key representatives and others about creating a more formal communication chain to inform of such or similar activity in the future."
