A High Wycombe gym will not be reopening after trying its best to "keep the business viable" throughout the coronavirus outbreak.

Welcome Gym, part of Wycombe Retail Park in Ryemead Way, will not be opening its doors to gym-goers once lockdown restrictions are lifted.

Simon Cutting, trust manager at Welcome Gym, said the news was "disappointing" after they had tried "everything possible to protect the business" in a statement online.

All gyms were forced to shut on March 23 and there is no clear idea when they may be able to reopen again.

Mr Cutting said: "We can all agree that we would never have foreseen the situation we all find ourselves in and the impact that the coronavirus pandemic has had on our friends, family and society as a whole.

"Businesses have suffered and unfortunately, there will continue to be challenges for many service industry sectors, such as ours, as lockdown eases and there is a slow return to normality.

"Whilst we have been closed our Trustees have done everything possible to protect the business.

"However, it is with great regret that we are writing to inform you that we are sadly not in a position to reopen our branch in High Wycombe.

"To secure our future it has been necessary that we gain the support of our partners and landlords and agree on a way forward with them.

"In the case of High Wycombe, unfortunately, this has not been possible and therefore our business here is not sustainable in these uncertain times.

"This was not an easy or quick decision for the team, however, it was a necessary move to help us focus on the future of the remaining branches.

"We, of course, will be looking to re-deploy staff where practical and give them the support and references they need to successfully secure new jobs."

Anyone who was a member at the High Wycombe gym can be transferred to the Chesham branch.

Any pre-paid memberships will also be refunded "as swiftly as possible".
