Gareth Ainsworth revealed after their play-off final win against Oxford United, that Martin O’Neil sent him a text before the Wembley battle.

The Northern Irishman took the Chairboys into the Football League in 1992/93 season before winning the Division Three play-off final a year later, where Wycombe beat Preston North End 4-2 at Wembley, with Ainsworth in the PNE team.

Ainsworth said: “I’ve had some great texts of people, Martin O’Neil has been fantastic, the absolute legend that brought this club into the football league

“Got a great text from him yesterday and it calmed my nerves and settled me down that someone like him knows what an achievement it getting to this playoff final never mind winning it

“Little moments like that make all the difference, enables me to be me and give the messages to boys”

Ainsworth, himself, will go into the history books at Adams Park as the first manager to take the club into the Championship.
