This will come into action tomorrow (Saturday, July 18), with councils in England being given a range of powers to try and reduce and contain local outbreaks of coronavirus.

Every council within will apply their powers to how they see fit, with constituencies being able to close sectors, impose ‘stay at home’ orders and stopping people from entering or leaving specific areas.

In a press conference this morning (Friday, July 17), the PM also confirmed that £3b will funded into the NHS, with his money going towards hospitals in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

This comes after lockdown restrictions across the country were lifted at the end of June, which allowed many businesses to reopen on the basis that they are abiding to social distancing rules, as well as having certain hygiene measures.

In his press conference today, the PM said: “From tomorrow, local authorities will have new powers in their areas.

"They will be able to close specific premises, shut public outdoor spaces and cancel events.

"These powers will enable local authorities to act more quickly in response to outbreaks where speed is paramount.

"Action by local councils will not always be sufficient, so next week we will publish draft regulations on how central government can intervene more effectively at a local level.

"Where justified by the evidence, ministers will be able to close whole sectors or types of premises in an area, introduce local stay-at-home orders, prevent people entering or leaving defined areas, reduce the size of gatherings beyond the national defined rules or restrict transport systems serving local areas."
