Plans for a cinema to be built in Marlow have now been approved.

We first reported on February 6 that there were ‘rumours’ of an Everyman Cinema coming to the town, but nothing was confirmed from the town council or the cinema themselves.

Then, on March 27, plans were submitted to Wycombe District Council by the cinematic giants to have a cinema built at the top of the town’s High Street, replacing the now-defunct Market Hall/Crown Hotel/Steamer Trading Company premises.

The original plans revealed that there will be two screens in the cinema, and they will be on two separate floors (on the ground floor and first floor), with there being a two-floor restaurant.

There will also be a lift, a set of stairs and the kitchen will be on the ground floor as well as a huge Everyman Cinema logo which could illuminate the street.

In the 10-page document, the applicant, Mr Simon Taylor of Colchester, said: “We believe the introduction of a cinema in this location would be a great addition to Marlow and the town centre.

“Wycombe District Local Plan outlines a set of eight core principles for Marlow, the seventh entry being the need to champion town centres by creating ‘thriving town and business centres to provide the focus of our social and economic activity.’

“The local plan also sets out the following objectives for the town centre:

- Ensure the town centre remains an attractive, vibrant and accessible place

- Maintain the vitality and viability of the town centre, ensuring it delivers a strong retail offering, including a wide range of fashion, leisure, and restaurants;

- Recognise that the historic core of Marlow is key to its character and the success of the town centre;

- Improve transport links between Globe Park and the town.

“We believe the introduction of a cinema in this central, prominent location would be in-line with the local authority’s strategy for the area and would help to encourage social activity whilst promoting new business and jobs for the town.”

Marlow's new Everyman Cinema will be based in a building that has been in the town since the last century, but the plans revealed that they will do everything they can to make sure that not everything is removed from the site.

It said in the application: “The late-Victorian and 20th-century extensions to the rear demonstrate the evolution of the building.

“However, this part of the building is of low significance having already been much altered and its legibility compromised and therefore the principle of demolition is acceptable.

“The former cells in the front section of the building date from the period that the building was used as the town lockup and which contribute to the historic interest of the building.”

This will be the second Everyman Cinema to come to Buckinghamshire, with the other being in Gerrads Cross.
