This year’s VJ Day celebrations in Marlow have been cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Every year, Marlow Town Council arrange a party in the town to celebrate Japan surrendering their stance in World War II, which effectively brought the most deadliest conflict in history to an end, on August 15, 1945.

The war, which lasted for six years and one day, claimed the lives of roughly 80m people.

It officially ended 17 days later after Japan surrendered, on September 2, 1945.

The planned celebrations, in conjunction with the Marlow branch of the Royal British Legion, were due to be held at the war memorial on the Causeway on August 15, but due to the pandemic, which has claimed the lives of 46,000 people in the country, the public celebrations have been cancelled.

Mayor Richard Scott said: “We are very disappointed not to be able to mark this day in the way we had planned but the safety of our residents has to come first.

“We very much hope that people will enjoy celebrations in their homes, as they did for VE Day.”

Shaun Murphy, Chairman of Marlow Royal British Legion, has asked households in Marlow to celebrate and commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of hostilities in a similar way to VE Day, by putting up bunting and flags and having socially-distanced parties in front gardens.

A toolkit has been provided to assist households to celebrate VJ Day, and it can be found at: www.ve-vjday75.gov.uk/toolkit.
