Part of House of Fraser building in the Eden Shopping Centre could be turned into a gym - but nearby residents are not happy with the plans for new windows that could overlook their flats.

House of Fraser, which is one of the flagship stores in the shopping centre, could have its second and third floors turned into a fitness centre.

It is the second application in a matter of months to add another gym to the shopping centre.

Plans to add one above the new Cote Brasserie were revealed in this paper in July.

If both of those applications are approved, it would bring the total of gyms in the shopping centre to three.

The future of House of Fraser has been called into question in recent years.

The department store was saved from closure in September 2018 after it was earlier earmarked for closure by bosses when the chain fell into administration.

And in November last year, it was revealed plans had been drawn up to potentially transform the shop into offices amid fears over its long-term future.

When the glossy Chandler Garvey brochure revealed the overhaul plans, a spokesman for Eden Shopping Centre said it was “forward planning” that should not be considered a done deal.

Now it seems the upper floors of the department store building could instead be turned into two separate units, with plans to change them into a gym.

One of the units would be entered via Desborough Road, where Caffe Nero currently is, and the other would be entered through new doors on Newlands Meadow.

New lifts would also be installed.

Residents of nearby Castle House are concerned that plans appear to show new full height windows will be installed on the side facing Desborough Road, prompting privacy fears.

Alex Wilson said the planned windows would look directly into their living room and bedroom.

Objecting to the plans, they wrote that the windows would provide "users of the gym with a direct, unobstructed view into my property."

Another Castle House resident, Swathi Balakrishna Pillai, shared similar concerns, adding: Desborough Road, between Castle House and the Eden mall, is narrow and adding windows to the Eden mall building will give a complete view of my entire home for everyone who is using the fitness centre."

They both urged that the window locations be rethought.

In the plans, Eden said the new use of the floors will help maintain the centre's "vibrancy and vitality" and the addition of a gym would not negatively affect House of Fraser.
