It's been a year since my last visit to the Marlow Bar & Grill and just like my visit 12 months ago, I left highly satisfied.

Like many restaurants across the UK, the Bar & Grill have had to adapt to the ongoing pandemic, with every member of staff wearing a face mask and with there being hand sanitisers on each table.

And yet despite the ongoing crisis, they still managed to produce high-quality food.

Starters

Isle of Man scallops (chorizo, broccoli, romesco sauce): £12.95

Fried chilli squid (Thai herbs, noodle salad): £9.50

Soup au pistou (vegetables, basil, croutons, pecorino): £6.95

My guests were treated to a great start when receiving the starters, as the food arrived in little to no time.

I opted to have the soup au pistou which consists of vegetables, basil, croutons and pecorino.

Why did I choose this?

Well, despite it being at the end of August when I visited the High Street venue, it was very wet and very cold, so it was the perfect dish to warm myself up.

The soup was light and incredibly delicious, with the croutons swimming with flavour.

One of my guests chose the scallops at the recommendation of one of the waitresses and like ever, they were not disappointed, as he described it as ‘full of flavour’.

The scallops and vegetables complimented each other, and it was the perfect start to their meal.

They also chose the fried chilli squid which was incredibly juicy, succulent, tender and light, which is just how squid should be served.

Mains

Roast lamb rump (creamed potato, spinach, broad beans, peas, mint): £20.75

Fillet steak (well done at 170g): £26

Salmon fishcakes (wilted spinach, parsley sauce/lunch & early evening menu where you can get a three-course meal for £24.25)

Crispy chicken escalope (breaded chicken filled with cheese & ham, Dijon cream sauce): £17.25

I opted to go for a fillet steak which was cooked well done.

Yes, I know, it is an insult to the chef to ask for your meat to be well done.

However, despite the unpopular opinion, the steak was cooked to perfection and it was, without doubt, one of the best steaks I have ever had.

It may have looked small on the plate, but it was incredibly filling and with a side salad and peppercorn sauce, it really was to die for.

Without doubt, it is a must-try if you were to go to the Bar & Grill.

Another winner on the menu was the salmon fishcakes.

Coming in a set of three, they again might have looked small, but they were very filling and light.

Swimming in a sea of parsley sauce, the breadcrumbs soaked up the accessory and give the fish an explosion of flavour.

After speaking to one of the waitresses, she revealed that the fishcakes were one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes.

It was clear to see why.

One of my guests chose the lamb rump as their main, and even though it was not his go-to choose when eating meat, he was blown away at how good the food tasted.

With a side of creamed mashed potatoes and well-cooked vegetables, no sooner had the food arrived, it was gone – it was the perfect size and the sides were just right as they complimented each other.

My other guest opted to go the crispy chicken escalope and like with the rest of our mains, there were no issues.

We also had side dishes as chips, creamed potatoes, vegetables and salad

Finally, for dessert, I chose a classic favourite in sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream.

It was presented beautifully and really hit the spot.

One of my guests chose the cherry Bakewell Tart and they described it as ‘the best tart they have ever had.’

Why is that?

Bucks Free Press:

The cheeseboard

It’s because of its presentation, it was incredibly soft and the tart melted in their mouth.

They were very happy with their dessert.

One of my others chose a traditional cheeseboard and with a variety of cheeses on show (Stilton, Brie, and Cheddar), and with the perfect amount of celery, grapes and plain biscuits, it an explosion of taste.

The only improvement would be the option of having bread on the board.

A perfect way to finish my meal at the Bar & Grill.

It is safe to say that my guests and I will be returning.

Without a doubt, it was a five-star display.
