Much-loved burger brand Wimpy is making a welcome return back to High Wycombe after 11 years away.

Famous for its sit-down fast-food, Wimpy opened its first site in London in 1954 and became a global brand by 1970.

The chain had more than 500 locations in the UK at its commercial peak but just 10 years later this number had fallen to 67, according to Vice.

So to see the chain opening new restaurants is always a delight for fans of its fast food offerings.

And High Wycombe fans can rejoice - a new restaurant is opening in White Hart Street, hopefully at the end of October.

It will have table space for up to 44 diners and obviously takeaway is also an option - but a home delivery option is also being planned, a spokesman told the Bucks Free Press.

It appears the restaurant will be moving into the old G'rillers site.

A spokesperson for Wimpy said: “We are delighted to be bringing Wimpy back to High Wycombe, we know our combination of good value, quality food and great customer service has been missed and we can’t wait to open the doors once again.”

The new restaurant will be owned and operated by a group of four franchisees who already run a number of Wimpy restaurants - including ones in Ruislip and Cheshunt.

No firm opening date has yet been set, but it is expected to be towards the end of October.

The previous Wimpy restaurant in High Wycombe closed in January 2009, a spokesman said.

It used to be in the Chilterns Shopping Centre. An archive photo from 1978 on swop.org.uk also shows there was a Wimpy on Crendon Street.

There was upset in Marlow at the end of 2017 when Wimpy shut its doors for good amid "escalating" rents in the High Street.
