"Don't go to A&E looking for a Covid-19 test" - that's the message from Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust.

People who are trying to get a coronavirus test should not go to the emergency department at Stoke Mandeville Hospital - because they won't be able to get one.

It comes amid widespread issues booking appointments at testing sites as the director of NHS test and trace said the demand for tests is outstripping capacity "three or four times", according to The Independent.

Despite the issues, the advice from Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust is still to try and book a test at a designated testing centre or order a home testing kit by calling 119.

Dr Abhishek Banerji, clinical lead of the emergency department at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, said those displaying symptoms must stay away from A&E in case they spread it to those who are more vulnerable.

He said: "It’s really important that people understand that they must not come to the Emergency Department for a Covid-19 test.

"Not only will you not be able to get one, but if you do have Covid-19 then you increase the risk of transmission to more vulnerable people.

"If you do have symptoms of Covid-19, you should self-isolate and book a test by either calling 119 or visit the NHS testing website. You should only request a test if you have symptoms of Covid-19. If you are unwell then you should contact 111.

"Stay home, stay safe, and save an unnecessary journey to our Emergency Department.”
