A PLAN to shut down a local Chinese takeaway and replace it with two four-bedroom homes is facing opposition.

The Beijing Chinese Restaurant and a three-bed flat on Old Wokingham Road in Crowthorne could make way for the homes if a planning application for an extension and a change of use is approved.

But after the News revealed the proposals two comments have been submitted to Wokingham Borough Council, the authority judging the plans.

Marc Brunel-Walker, a councillor at Bracknell Forest Council, sent in his concerns last week.

His objection was based on “the change of use, loss of employment space and loss of commercial space in the area.”

Cllr Brunel-Walker also voiced concerns about parking.

His comment added: “Six spaces are allocated which, although compliant with standards does not allow any space for visitor or additional parking.

“Hatch Ride does not easily or safely enable on-street parking and all homes on the road have off-street parking.”

Other worries included the new development being ‘out of keeping with the area’, a loss pf privacy to residents on Hatch Ride, and potential harm to an oak tree at the site.

Some residents left comments in support of the restaurant after the News posted details of the plans in Facebook group We Love Crowthorne Village.

One said: “Sad news. Had a few meals from there in the last couple of weeks and they've been really good.”

Others welcomed the news, however, and one resident left a comment in support of the application on WBC’s planning portal.

They claimed building the new homes would remove parking problems at the site, eliminate road safety issues, and would stop noise and smell pollution from affecting neighbours.

According to Beijing Chinese’s website, the restaurant serves “unusual food combining the best of Asian Cuisine” and an “authentic Chinese experience”.

Few details exist about the plan, which is currently being considered by Wokingham Borough Council.

Residents have until Tuesday, October 13 to give their views on the proposal, and can do so by searching for planning reference 202440 at planning.wokingham.gov.uk
