THE COST to overhaul a redundant railway shed and the estimated date of its ‘delivery’ have been published by the council.

A recently published report by Buckinghamshire Council includes an “approved budget” of £4 million to regenerate High Wycombe’s iconic Brunel Engine Shed – and the land that surrounds it.

According to council documents, the Grade II listed building designed by Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1854, is at the “Technical Design” phase, which refers to the “pre-construction technical, specification and procurement stage”.

The project itself has an “end date” of July 2021.

Buckinghamshire Council recently approved the creation of a High Wycombe Regeneration Board, an official arm tasked to make similar big-ticket projects in the town a reality.

It should be noted however the speed and delivery of such projects is at the mercy of the pandemic’s impact on the economy.

The historic shed has been left empty and dilapidated for years.

It was purchased from Chiltern Railways by the former Wycombe District Council in 2019.

Previous reports by this newspaper revealed plans to turn the premises into shops, offices, and cafes as part of a wider scheme to overhaul what the council calls the ‘Eastern Quarter’.

A new roof and improved landscaping were also mentioned.

The Engine Shed is one of the first things you see when arriving at High Wycombe station.

In a previous report, former Wycombe Town mayor Trevor Snaith said the iconic building should be a “welcoming opening space” and a “gateway to town as you arrive”.
