HOSTILITIES against the granting of a licence for a new Indian restaurant will be aired during an upcoming hearing.

Rang Mahal Limited is seeking a new licence for its Riwaz restaurant on Aylesbury End, in Beaconsfield – but it is facing several objections from locals.

Azzurri Restaurants Limited had been the licence holder from February 2013 to July 2020 when it went into administration. And before that the Grade II listed building was the Old Hare Public House.

But after the lapse of the previous licence, Rang Mahal Limited must apply for a fresh one rather than a transfer.

Most recently the premises has been the Italian restaurant Zizzi.

During the last ten years, the licensing team received no complaints relating to the premises, according to council documents.

However, during a 28-day consultation that finished on November 20, 21 objections were received, including from the Old Town Close Residential Area committee. There were no letters of support.

In the interests of the “prevention of public nuisance”, residents cite the 5am closure time on New Year’s Day and use of the garden after 10pm among their concerns.

Objectors also take issue with the suggestion of an outside bar, “noise and odour” from the kitchen, sleep disturbance from deliveries, bin storage and collection, and parking “nuisance” caused by staff and couriers.

The applicant does seek to address some of these concerns in an amended series of proposed conditions, including ejecting patrons by 2.30am on New Year’s Day.

The matter will be debated during a licencing sub-committee on Wednesday, December 16.
