Four Bucks MPs wrote a New Year's message to readers.

'Hope for normality in New Year' - Wycombe MP Steve Baker

As we ring out the old year and ring in the new, I would like to wish everyone a happy 2021.

There is no doubt the old year was terribly hard for many people and everyone will be looking forward to things getting better. I sincerely hope they do.

I know as the year continues we will see the effect the coronavirus restrictions have had on the economy.

It is possible there will be increased unemployment and companies will have to adapt to new methods of doing business.

This is why, during 2020, I have been working with other MPs to ask the Government to consider the effects of restrictions on jobs, youth unemployment and the wider economy.

I will continue to do everything I can to support jobs and business in the coming year.

I know many people have felt isolated and many social events have not taken place.

As the coronavirus vaccine continues to be rolled-out I am confident we will see life return to normal as the months progress.

Here’s hoping 2021 is a good year for everyone.

'Overcoming difficulties in 2021' - Chesham and Amersham MP Cheryl Gillan

Certainties are hard to find at the moment, when the coronavirus is resurgent.

Buckinghamshire is living within the Tier 4 regulations as a result, with a lot of families being separated from one another for that reason.

Pupils do not know when they can get back to school in the New Year. Other people are wondering whether they will have a job in 2021, or whether they must make employees redundant.

It seems that we cannot take anything for granted right now.

Yet there still are certainties and chief amongst those is the way that the human mind and spirit will be working to devise ways of overcoming the difficulties, in the short and long term.

We are all different and while there are those who are pessimistic, who cannot immediately see a way ahead, there are optimists who will perceive the path to take.

People in Buckinghamshire have already benefited from the Covid-19 vaccinations and that is thanks to the scientists who put all their efforts into creating the vaccines, despite those who declared it to be an impossible quest.

Despite all the pressures on our NHS we know that everyone will do their utmost to care and meet the challenges ahead.

We have a strong democratic system and that in itself offers a way forward, because it is adaptable and flourishes despite (or equally because of) the obstacles which this system encounters.

The wheel of fortune may turn, but it is a wheel and it keeps turning.

The Prime Minister said on Christmas Eve that ‘beating Covid is our number one national priority’ and so it is. The resolution of the trade talks was achieved and from January 1, 2021 we are outside the customs union and outside the single market.

This country has the biggest trade deal yet, zero tariff and zero quota on trade worth £668 Billion in 2019, a comprehensive Canada-style free trade agreement, to be put to Parliament this week.

It would provide certainty for the aviation industry which is crucial to this constituency with so many people working at Heathrow or in companies which export goods.

By Christmas Eve, nearly 800,000 people had been vaccinated and that work will continue apace, with, as I write, the hope of the Oxford vaccine being close to medical approval and introduction.

Health, happiness and a refreshed determination to restore prosperity are the wishes for 2021.

Happy New Year to all our readers.

'Brighter days lay ahead' - Beaconsfield MP Joy Morrissey

As we come to the end of a truly awful year, I am so glad to be able to finish 2020 by writing something positive.

Whilst at times it has looked as though this awful pandemic would never end, the advent of vaccines has at last opened up a way out of this pandemic.

Already over 700,000 people have been vaccinated with the Pfizer/BioNTech vacicine and as of writing this we will shortly be expecting approval of the Oxford/Astra Zennaca vaccine.

This will surely be a game changer as it is cheap, easily stored, and easy to transport. Additionally, the UK Government has secured 100 million doses, enough to inoculate 50 million UK citizens.

Furthermore, as the New Year progresses more vaccines will be approved, of which the UK has secured a significant number. The New Year will thus see us rolling out vaccines at speed so that we can beat this virus as soon as possible.

As the elderly and clinically vulnerable will be given priority we will likely see the death rate and hospitalisations start to fall as we move towards spring and summer.

As the number of deaths fall and pressure on the NHS begins to ease, we will finally be in a position where we can roll back restrictions permanently.

In addition to this great news is the final resolution of Brexit. Now that the Prime Minister has negotiated a good deal with the EU we can now finally move on from this divisive debate and instead focus on the many opportunities which lay ahead of us outside the EU.

After such an awful year it is great to end it with some positivity.
There is of course a long road ahead of us and we must continue to remain vigilant in our efforts to tackle the virus and make the most of Brexit.

However, I firmly believe the brighter days lay ahead.

'Rebuilding Covid devastation in 2021' - Buckingham MP Greg Smith

2021 can and must be a year of hope and a year of re-building.
Re-building that which Covid-19 and the virus related restrictions so devastatingly broke.

And a year of re-building our place in the world as a global, free-trading, outward looking economic powerhouse, free to set our own path once more.

The rollout of the Covid-19 vaccination is undoubtedly the path back to the normality we all crave. The full roll out cannot come soon enough.

The various lockdowns and tiered restrictions have significantly divided public opinion throughout 2020.

But we can surely all unite around the vaccine already being deployed and the very real prospect of the Oxford vaccine being approved to join the mix very soon.

It is vital, once the most vulnerable to this horrendous disease are vaccinated that every single freedom and liberty we enjoyed before are fully restored.

A further beacon of hope is that our International Trade team have now secured trade deals covering a whopping sixty-one countries, plus the European Union.

This equates to trade worth £867 billion to our country.

And the even greater news is that there is more to come. So much to gain to grow our economy and get behind our first class manufacturers, food and drink producers, digital service providers and so many more.

Furthermore the government continues to deliver on our manifesto.

Our local hospitals are receiving a big boost, with a new children’s A&E to be built at Stoke Mandeville and a new women and children’s hospital at Milton Keynes plus rebuilding and enabling work on the existing hospital.

There are 14,800 more nurses and 6,250 more doctors in our NHS compared to last year. Thames Valley Police is getting an additional £26.1 million this year and 260 extra officers as part of the national drive to deliver 20,000 extra officers.

There’s a £14.4 billion three-year boost to school funding, where every secondary school will receive at least £5,150 per pupil funding from 2021.

The UK now has a fairer, points based immigration system. And our national defence has had the biggest boost in 30 years with an extra £24 billion.

So, as we welcome in 2021, can I once more thank everyone who has done so much throughout 2020: our key workers in the NHS and care sector, teachers, council workers, transport workers, police and other emergency services, armed forces, supermarkets and food retailers, food producers, all our wonderful volunteers and so many more.

Let’s have a 2021 to celebrate and remember. Happy New Year.
