Ricky Gervais has given a major boost to a family desperately searching for their dog who is feared stolen.

The actor, who has a home in Marlow, is a well-known animal lover.

So when he heard about the plight of Liv Turner's family, who are trying to find their beloved pet dog Dexter, he shared their appeal on Facebook.

Dexter is feared stolen and has been missing since Thursday, January 14.

The red fox Labrador disappeared while on his usual walk in Hogback Woods in Holtspur at around 1.30pm.

Despite weeks of intense searching, Dexter still has not been found.

Ricky has now shared a poster warning about Dexter's disappearance in a bid to raise awareness to his 4.8 million Facebook followers.

He wrote: "Have you seen Dexter? Three weeks ago (January 14th) 7 year old Labrador Dexter, went missing from his walk in Beaconsfield (HP9 area). If you know anything or have seen him, Dexter's poster is below and here is the Facebook group. Cheers."

So far, the post has more than 6,000 likes and 7,800 shares.

Wildlife TV presenter and conservationist Chris Packham also shared a post on Twitter, adding: "Can we help Liv get Dexter home?"

The support has been hugely welcomed by Liv and her family.

Liv wrote: "Another new day hoping we’ll get closer to finding our boy. Yesterday’s use of social media was so heartwarming for my family with people now all over the world sharing Dexter’s story with the help of Chris Packham and Ricky Gervais.

"Also please keep sending me any dogs found or sighted that resemble Dexter, I’m happy to check them all out!

"Let’s keep up the momentum and keep sharing as much as you can, we can’t stop until Dexter is home."

  • Do not chase, call or attempt to catch him - he is in survival mode and this will scare him
  • Take a photo/video
  • Make a note of the location and direction he was heading and how he seemed
