“OVERFLOWING” public bins deemed a “health hazard” are to be cleared by the council after one resident claimed some had not been emptied “for weeks”.

Buckinghamshire Council vowed to rid “routinely full” bins around Amersham of their waste, after one Woodside Road resident asked why some appeared to have been neglected.

RESIDENT: 'It is very typical, as well as inconvenient and ugly'

They claimed it had been weeks since the bins at the entrance to The Chiltern Pools, on Chiltern Avenue, and at the intersection of Orchard Lane, King George V Road and Hyrons Lane had been emptied.

On February 15 and 16 they posted images on social media of the bins bulging with rubbish, some spilling onto the ground.

They said bags they had put in the pool’s bins back in January were still there.

They described it as “very typical”, as well as “inconvenient and ugly”.

RESIDENT: 'Bins routinely full and overflowing. Some for weeks. Why?'

Another resident said: “The bins at Hervines Park are often overflowing as well, and I have suggested to the town council to add more bins. People are clearly doing the right thing by binning their rubbish, so let’s not discourage them from doing that by not having the bins available.”

Bucks Council said an increased number of people exercising outside was a key factor.

“@AmershamTC @BucksCouncil what’s going on with emptying public rubbish bins lately?” wrote the Woodside Road resident online. “Amersham bins routinely full and overflowing. Some for weeks. Why? It’s a public health hazard as well as inconvenient and ugly.”

“What confuses me is there are bins near these…which have been emptied since yesterday, while others aren’t touched for weeks.”

On social media the authority urged them to report such matters online, adding: “We do experience public bins being used to dispose of items that should not be placed in the bins which also causes public bins to overflow a lot quicker than the schedule.”

A Buckinghamshire Council spokesman said: “We are getting Veolia out to clear the bins.

“The main issue is the increased number of people taking exercise around parks etc filling up litter bins quicker – we are looking at the options for more frequent clearance.”
