High Wycombe residents have reacted to the news that on average fly-tipped waste is discovered three times a day.

The majority of residents believed the increased amount of fly-tipping – 988 incidents reported last year- is due to the charging introduced at rubbish tips.

By law, the council must accept day-to-day household waste free of charge, for example, garden waste, electricals, and paper.

However 'non-household waste', such as landscaping, construction, or demolition can be charged due to the cost of disposal. (To view the full list of charges visit here.)

Residents argued that if charges weren’t enforced the town would see less fly-tipping in the area.

One claimed on Facebook: “Well it’s not a surprise!

“I went to high heavens last week with part of a shower door abs it cost me £12!”

Another said: “Make it free to dispose at sites! Simple!

“That reduces fly-tipping and the costs and environmental damage to wildlife and the ground.”

Some residents believed it is due to the queues that can be found at the tips.

They said: “I had to queue for over 40 mins at the Wycombe Centre this morning.

“I thought it would be quicker today as Sunday’s queue stretched back to the main road!

However, one resident argued the rise in cases is due to the price of clearing houses.

He argued: “I am not sure that this arises because of charges at the dump.

I recently had to have a house cleared - no way would I have done that myself.

“I looked for a reputable carrier, you have to pay for that - and that is what people are not prepared to do."
