A Buckinghamshire pair have been fined for driving to West Yorkshire to visit their grandchildren.

West Yorkshire Police said they issued two tickets to the "offending" grandparents for travelling three and a half hours up the M1 to Keighley to see their loved ones on March 4.

Fixed penalty notices for leaving home without a "reasonable excuse" are £200 for the first offence.

Urging people to stay at home during lockdown, the police said: "Travelling from Buckinghamshire to Keighley is not an essential journey even if it is to see the grandkids. Two tickets issued to offending couple."

They included the hashtags "#ExpensiveTrip" and "#DontBlameGrandkids".

The move prompted a mixed response from fellow Twitter users. One said: "Disgusting, how do you know those parents were not struggling with their mental health and needed some support?"

Another said: "Not sure this is something to brag about."

On the other hand, one user said: "Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Many want more enforcement of rule breakers, others want less. As always West Yorks Police are stuck in the middle.

"Only the officers and those stopped have the full picture of the circumstances."
