The shocking moment a "reckless" driver from Aylesbury crashed into a shop, narrowly missing the shopkeer, was caught on CCTV.

Jamie Sturges, 28, of Patrick Way, has been jailed for a year following the terrifying incident in Hampden Gardens on March 10, 2020.

Sturges failed to stop his van for police, made off at speed before mounting the path and ramming a parked car before crashing into a shop front, nearly running over the shopkeeper outside.

He managed to flee from police but his van was later found abandoned outside Stoke Mandeville Hospital with drugs in the back.

Officers were able to use CCTV to determine that Sturges had been driving at the time and he was charged on August 27 last year.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and possession of a class A drug and was jailed for 12 months following a hearing at Aylesbury Crown Court on February 25.

He has also been banned from driving for 24 months.

Investigating officer PC Levi Fensom, based at Aylesbury police station, said: “Sturges’s driving that evening was completely reckless and he had total disregard for the safety of other members of the public.

“The judge remarked that he was fortunate to be in court for dangerous driving rather than death by dangerous driving and we hope he now recognises the serious nature of his actions.

“A significant amount of evidence was gathered in this case which made it impossible for Sturges to do anything other than plead guilty.

“We will take offences like this extremely seriously to ensure that our roads and communities are safe for everyone.”
