The sweeping lawns, grand manor house and glistening lake at the West Wycombe Estate have provided the perfect backdrop for many films and TV shows over the years.

And with news of another TV show, The Power, reportedly being filmed there, with residents living near there warned they may hear “gunfire sounds” ringing out, we’ve rounded up the top TV shows and films to be shot at the estate.

Downton Abbey

A number of interior scenes of the opulent 20th Century historical drama were filmed at West Wycombe House.

The grand mansion is the setting of Lady Rosamund’s home, where the Grantham girls go in difficult times.

The popular ITV show has also been filmed in other parts of Bucks, including Hall Place, Beaconsfield (Mrs Crawley’s house), Halton House and Waddesdon Manor.

Rough Cut

This 1980s drama sees two jewel thieves join forces to steal $30 million in uncut jewels and eventually, become romantically involved.

According to IMDB, the opening party sequences were filmed on the estate, at West Wycombe House and West Wycombe Park.

The Importance of Being Earnest

In this Reese Witherspoon, Rupert Everett and Colin Firth starrer, two men living in 1890s England use the same pseudonym, Ernest, for their furtive activities – until they both fall in love with the same woman.

In the film, Jack Worthing’s country estate in Hertfordshire is actually set in West Wycombe Park.

Victoria & Abdul

This sweet 2017 film tells the story of Queen Victoria who strikes up an unlikely friendship with an Indian clerk, Abdul Karim.

Many of the scenes, including where Queen Victoria dances with Abdul and Florence House, where Signore Puccini performs, were filmed at West Wycombe.

X-Men: First Class

While many would not associate a movie like X-Men to be filmed on a stately estate like West Wycombe, parts of the film were.

West Wycombe House was deemed the perfect location for a ‘Russian’ military retreat.

It is also the setting for where Emma Frost (January Jones) is interrogated.
