Police have addressed fears over dog thefts in the area amid a string of social media posts detailing concerning incidents.

Thames Valley Police Chiltern and South Bucks said reported dog thefts in the area remain low - but that could mean that snatching attempts are not being reported.

There have been a string of reports of concerning incidents on social media of people acting strangely and asking about people's pets in different areas.

Officers urged anyone who has experienced or witnessed a theft or attempted theft of a dog to tell them about it.

They said: "If you do share any information/an appeal that you have about a potential dog theft on social media, please only do so if you have a police reference number; either a report number, or a call log number from when you reported it online or over the phone, and include that in your post.

"This is because if posts appear without reference numbers, it may make it appear that there are more dog thefts than there actually are.

"So, if you see a social media post without a police reference number, please either check with the poster that it was reported to us, or please encourage the person to do so."

You can report incidents to police by calling 101 or via their website and in an emergency, call 999.
