A RECENT spate of drug abuse and vandalism at a sports club has prompted the need for new CCTV and security measures to identify the culprits.

Holmer Green Sports Association and Holmer Green Football Club have been awarded £2,500 by the Missendens Community Board to beef up security at facilities on Watchet Lane.

The total cost for the project is £3,400 and is in response to a series of incidents of vandalism, drug use, boozing and antisocial behaviour over the past six months.

“As well as vandalism, there is evidence of drug and alcohol use in the area”, a report states.

“The antisocial behaviour that has been experienced is not unique to the club and it is important that it be prevented to make Holmer Green a safe and pleasant community for all.

“The club is well used by other young people from the village and surrounding areas, and it is disappointing that a small group feel the need to spoil the environment.

“If the young people involved can be identified, then approaches can be made to work with them in a constructive manner.”

A more robust barrier and security lighting are also being considered, as are other diversionary activities such as street art and joint efforts with other clubs in the area.
