Wycombe MP Steve Baker has donated money and launched an appeal for help after a volcano eruption in St Vincent caused devastation.

More than 16,000 people have been forced out of their homes after the La Soufrière volcano erupted on Friday, April 9, blanketing the island in ash.

High Wycombe has the largest population of Vincentians in the UK.

Smaller volcano explosions happened over the weekend, causing power cuts, and further eruptions are expected.

Wycombe MP Steve Baker has made an appeal for help for those living in St Vincent and the Grenadines and has been in touch with the SVG High Commissioner in London and government ministers.

Mr Baker has also donated to a fund set up by the High Commission which has so far raised more than £72,000.

Sharing photos of the ash damage to his 107,000 Twitter followers, Mr Baker said: "Photos of the aftermath of the La Soufriere volcano eruption in St Vincent clearly show the awful impact of this emergency.

"Wycombe is home to a large part of the Vincentian community in the UK Diaspora so please give generously to the appeal."

The money raised will help those affected receive the "critical support they need to get their lives back to some level of normalcy when the all clear is given", the page says.

Meanwhile SV2G, the High Wycombe charity, has managed to raise more than £1,700 in just 24 hours.

They said: "This money will be immediately sent towards purchasing supplies that will be distributed by the grassroot movement across St. Vincent and The Grenadines."

Wycombe Multicultural Organisation is also offering the Hilltop Community Centre in High Wycombe as a donation point from Tuesday, April 13, so vital supplies can be dropped off.

The items urgently needed include nappies and wipes, candles, batteries, canned foods, rice, sugar, clean clothes and shoes for babies, children and adults, toothpaste, masks and gloves and medical supplies.

The drop-off times will be 5pm to 8.30pm on April 13, 14, 15 and 11am to 3pm on April 17.

Anyone wanting to donate items is asked to call Sebert Graham before arriving on 07899 817876 with an approximate arrival time and social distancing must be adhered to.
