A popular pilot who resided in Buckinghamshire has been remembered after a neighbourhood in a new property development has been named after him.

Roy Bartman, who lived in what was then Belmore Hotel on the Risborough Road in Stoke Mandeville, flew for the Royal Air Force, before working for British Airways as well as various airlines in Africa.

He sadly passed away two decades ago, but his legacy has lived on as the neighbourhood of ‘Roylands’, is now part of Kier Living’s Whitethorn Garden development.

His son, Nick Bartman, then bought the property in the late 1990s to then turn it back to a family home, naming it Thornbrook House.

He eventually sold the property to Kier Living in 2018.

Nick said: “I am delighted that Kier Living has remembered my father’s legacy.

“The land was known as Whitethorn, the name of the current development, in the 1910s but was renamed Belmore in the 1930s, to then be bought my grandmother in the 1940s.

“Since then, the land has remained in our family so it’s wonderful that my father, who died 20 years ago, is remembered this way.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing Kier Living transform this area into new homes and we hope many people get to call it ‘home’ for years to come.”

Jonathan Miller, regional director for Kier Living Eastern added: “It has been fascinating to learn about the history of this land from Roy’s son and given the impressive aviation heritage within the Bartman family, we wanted to pay tribute to this within our Stoke Mandeville development.”
