Three Bucks businesses have been given a Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

JUNE Medical and Martin Audio Ltd, both in High Wycombe, and Amersham-based Melford Technologies Ltd, have been handed the prestigious awards designed to “recognise and encourage outstanding achievements” in the fields of innovation, international trade, sustainable development and promoting opportunity (through social mobility).

The 2021 award winners in Bucks were successful in the innovation and international trade categories.

In the innovation category, which the two High Wycombe businesses received their award for, achievements are assessed for invention, design or production of goods; performance of services; marketing and distribution; or, after-sale support of goods or services, that have realised outstanding commercial success over two years or continuous commercial success over five years.

Angela Spang, CEO and founder of JUNE Medical, pioneered the company's Galaxy II single-use surgical retractor and is delighted with the honour.

She said: “This award is the result of all the hard work from everyone in the team. Our vision is to positively impact patients’ lives by making surgery easier for the surgeons and nurses, and safer for every patient. Being recognised for our work will help the company continue this quest.”

And Dom Harter managing director of Martin Audio Ltd, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, said: “It’s an honour to win such a prestigious award and very fitting to do so in our 50th anniversary year.

“Wavefront Precision arrays have become our fastest ever selling line array format suitable for both install and live sound applications and the Queen’s Award for Enterprise underlines both its innovation and commercial success.”

Melford Technologies Ltd won its award for the international trade category, which recognises “substantial growth” in overseas earnings and in commercial success (for their business size and sector) through either outstanding achievement over three years or continuous achievement over six years.

The firm offers a range of indoor and outdoor digital technology solutions for industries to “transform operational efficiency and customer experience”.

Managing director Steve Osborne said: “We are extremely honoured to receive such a prestigious endorsement for our innovation and service to our clients. Our staff work extremely hard to deliver high quality robust products to our customers and should be justifiably proud of their contribution to this outstanding achievement.

“It is humbling to be recognised as world-class in all that we do, and this extraordinary award is testament to everyone’s dedication and innovative spirit here at Melford Technologies.”

He added: “We are rightly proud of our achievements, and this award will provide the fillip required for the future of the business as we transition from this, the most difficult of times.

“Our sincere thanks to our incredible array of customers and suppliers without whom we would not exist.

“Congratulations to all the staff of Melford as this award would not have been possible without your hard work and dedication.”

The Queen’s Awards scheme was instituted by Royal Warrant in 1965 and the first awards were made in 1966.

They are the most prestigious awards for UK businesses, with 205 firms around the country recognised this year.

Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, Countess Howe, said she was looking forward to presenting the awards to the three businesses on behalf of the Queen.

She said: “I have great admiration for the three businesses in Buckinghamshire which have been selected to receive the Queen’s Award for Enterprise this year.

“The additional challenges of Covid-19 and Brexit cannot have made operations easy, so this achievement is even more remarkable.

“The Queen’s Awards differ from personal honours such as OBEs and MBEs, since they are given to an industrial or business unit as a whole and recognize management and employees working as a team.

“A Queen’s Award for Enterprise is a whole company success, and the businesses can feel justifiably proud of their achievement.

“Based as they are in the entrepreneurial heart of Britain, it is exciting to acknowledge the contribution which they have made to the prosperity of the county.

“My congratulations go to all three companies, and I look forward to visiting each of them in due course to make the presentations on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen.”
