A Bromley mum’s celebration of her son’s engagement took an unexpected turn when the surprise cake arrived looking like an “inflamed, red boil.”

Kathy Whittle, 48, ordered a traditional, white, tiered design from a local baker who advertised their services on a Facebook group, spending £50.

While her 25-year-old son’s proposal was successful, the red beast that arrived earlier that day “would have been perfect if his partner had said no.”

Kathy said: “She turned up at the door and dumped it in my husband’s hand, before basically running away.

“As soon as I opened it, I thought ‘what the hell?’

“It turned what would have been a nice couple’s moment into the biggest joke; all we did was laugh.

“I posted a photo on Facebook, first describing it as an inflamed, red, pussy boil.

“There have been plenty of other descriptions posted in the comments, which I probably shouldn’t repeat.”

Kathy said the local baker, Yummy Mummy Bakes, blocked her on Facebook after she pursued a refund.

She even asked if it could at least be collected as it was “scaring the grandkids.”

Out of grim curiosity, Kathy eventually cut a slice out of the monstrosity, revealing a Victoria sponge-like centre.

Only her son was willing to sample the taste, about which he “had nothing positive to say.”

“I’m barred from getting them a wedding cake,” Kathy added.
