With more than 884 million views, Charlie Bit My Finger is one of the original viral videos to grace the internet helping YouTube become the platform it is today.

The Davies-Carr family who are from Marlow have now sold the clip for £538,000.

With over 2.3 million likes on the platform, the 56-second clip sees Harry sitting with his baby brother Charlie on his lap - until he takes a playful bite of one of his fingers.

It was auctioned as an NFT, a non-fungible token, with the family due to take the video off YouTube.

Bids came into their auction page throughout the weekend, but the price significantly increased in the final hours on Sunday.

The video is still on YouTube but it is expected to be taken off the platform soon:

The bidding war was between two anonymous accounts with "3fmusic" eventually outbidding "mememaster" for the video.

An NFT is a growing trend with the technology similar to a collectible certificate of authenticity, but its owner does not actually buy the copyright itself.

It means original versions of viral videos, memes, or tweets can be sold as if they were art.

Whether investing in NFTs turns out to be a shrewd investment or a part of a temporary craze remains to be seen.

The 10-year-old internet meme, Nyan Cat, was sold for £409,000 in February.

The "Disaster Girl Meme" - a picture of a young girl smiling with a fire in the background was recently sold as an NFT for £341,000.

The video was originally uploaded to YouTube by Harry and Charlie's dad, Howard, in 2007, because the clip was too large to send over an email to their godparents in America.
