Transport for Bucks has responded after residents living on a "dangerous" High Wycombe road urged them to make changes after a pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run.

In the wake of the tragic death of a 56-year-old man on Hughenden Avenue late on Thursday night in a hit-and-run, residents slammed the road for being "dangerous".

Residents living in the road have also backed a petition set up by Gurdip Atwal to get road safety and anti-speeding measures put in place.

In the petition, Gurdip wrote: "On 20 May 2021, a 56 year-old man was killed by a car in a hit-and-run incident on Hughenden Avenue, near the Lisle Road junction.

"In November 2016, a resident of the road also died after being hit by a car around the same spot, while attempting to cross the road.

"Both incidents happened in the evening while it was dark, with both cars not noticing the pedestrians while coming down the hill at speed.

"We want additional safety measures to be installed to prevent further death and injury happening in our community, caused by dangerous driving.

"We have traffic lights and speed warning signs at the bottom of the road, by the intersection with Hughenden Boulevard, but we are calling for additional safety measures to be installed on Hughenden Avenue, to prevent further fatalities and injuries from vehicles speeding up and down the hill.

"Speed breakers/bumps would be ideal, and speed cameras."

So far, 143 people have signed the petition, which will be sent to Buckinghamshire Council.

One person said: "I signed because it’s like playing a game of chicken whilst trying to cross the road, I have had countless near misses because of speeding drivers.

"Pulling on/off of my drive is a nightmare because speeding drivers can’t wait or slow down in time, they greet me with aggression and beeping, it’s not fair.

"A young child was also hit a few years ago, it’s only going to happen again, it shouldn’t take 2 fatalities in 4 years for something to be done."

After residents spoke out, the Bucks Free Press approached Transport for Bucks for clarification on their plans for the road.

A spokesman said: "Transport for Buckinghamshire is aware of the road traffic collision on Hughenden Avenue that happened on the evening of Thursday 20th May 2021 which tragically resulted in a pedestrian fatality.

"Once we are notified of a fatal collision, a site meeting is held jointly with the police to consider the circumstances, which includes checking the location for any highway issues that may have been a contributory factor.

"Whilst a formal investigation is ongoing we are unable to give any further details of specific incidents."

According to the last update from Thames Valley Police, no one has yet been arrested in connection with the hit-and-run on Thursday and the man who died has not been identified.
