Officers were called to the Thames between Cookham and Bourne End on Bank Holiday Monday at around 3pm to reports that a teenage boy had entered the water but hadn’t been seen leaving.

Bucks Fire and Rescue and South Central Ambulance Service were seen searching the water at Bourne End Marina, while a police helicopter circled overhead.

Following a number of searches, the body of a boy was recovered from the river by divers.

The boy has been named locally as Jordan, believed to be 15-years-old.

The news prompted dozens of readers to pay tribute to the youngster on BFP’s social media pages and website, with Ann Hastings calling for a ‘water awareness week’ to be held across Bucks and the rest of the country ahead of the May Bank Holiday and half-term.

She wrote: “So sad and sincere prayers and thoughts to the family.

“They really should do an annual water awareness week across Bucks and Berks/whole country before the May half-term to teach about undercurrents, water shock and safety around rivers and lakes.

“It’s such a frequent tragic reoccurrence every year.”

Maidenhead Rugby Football Club confirmed on its social media pages that Jordan was a part of the club, adding: “It is with great sadness that Maidenhead RFC has to announce that the young boy that passed away in the river at Bourne End this week was one of our own.

“Jordan was a valued and loved member of Maids U16s with a great sense of humour and was growing in strength and ability within the squad.

“The whole Maids’ family pass all our love and condolences to his family and friends at this tragic time.”

And Sarah Blick commented: “This is so sad and I can't stop thinking about it – how he was just having fun with his friends; how scared he must have been; how his friends who were there and saw it happen must be feeling; how his family must be feeling; his teachers; his other friends.

“It’s just so awful, I really hope that people learn something from tragedies and realise that the river might look safe, but it is incredibly dangerous.”

Kath Waddelow said: “Devastating news, I send my thoughts and prayers to his parents and other members of the family,” while Gilly Edmond commented: “This is heartbreaking, my thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Silma Francis wrote: “We would like to send our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the teenager who has been lost in this tragic way.

“We know from losing Kyrece Francis how painful it was each day, it has left a deep hole in our hearts. May God continue to bless you at this sad time.”

And Anthea McKenzie commented: “Such a tragic event. A bright young soul taken from his loved ones. I cried when I heard they had found him.

Bourne End Marina was cordoned off for a number of hours on Monday but had reopened by Tuesday.
