Green Party leaders visited Bucks in recent weeks as part of the campaign trail for the upcoming Chesham and Amersham by-election.

Green Party co-leader Sîan Berry, and Green peer Baroness Jenny Jones were welcomed by the party’s candidate, Carolyne Culver, to the constituency in the last full week of campaigning before voters go to the polls next Thursday (June 17).

On Saturday, Ms Berry met a family who say their lives have been “turned upside down” by the construction of a HS2 haul road “without any likelihood of compensation, and [are] left with a property that may be impossible to sell”.

Baroness Jones then met Mark Kier, an environmental campaigner who brought legal action against Natural England on behalf of the Jones’ Hill Wood Earth Protectors after HS2 was allowed to fell 0.7 hectares of land at Jones’ Hill Wood, near Wendover, as part of its construction works.

Mr Keir said Natural England was wrong to grant a licence allowing clearance work to go ahead – but lost his case after Mr Justice Holgate ruled against the 59-year-old, saying none of the grounds Mr Keir had put forward were “arguable”.

Ms Culver said: “Sian and Jenny’s visits reinforce how seriously the Green Party has been taking the ecological threat posed by HS2 in this area.

“We have been the only party to consistently oppose HS2 at every turn both nationally and locally. Our members have been on the ground for years in this constituency, fighting with local residents to hold HS2 to account and to try and prevent this disastrous project.

“There is still a huge amount of work to do; voting Green next Thursday will send the strongest signal to the Conservative government that these fights are not over, and that the residents of Chesham and Amersham cannot be taken for granted.”
