A drink driver who was caught in Marlow on his way to a strip club has been fined and banned from driving.

William Phillips, aged 31, of New Road in High Wycombe, was sentenced at Wycombe Magistrates’ Court today (Tuesday), after pleading guilty to one count of drink driving.

The court heard from prosecutor Dana Patel that at around 12.45am on Wednesday, May 26, Phillips was noticed by police driving a white Range Rover.

After following him, they pulled him over in Bisham Road and conducted a breath test – which showed he was above the legal limit.

According to Ms Patel, Phillips told the police that he was on the way to a strip club in Maidenhead when they stopped him, and that he was co-operative throughout.

The court also heard that Phillips had passengers in his car with him, and that he was on licence having recently been released from prison.

Appearing in court, Phillips was apologetic when he addressed the magistrates.

He said: “It was not a case of going out and acting recklessly, I was giving my friends a lift who were very drunk.

“I didn’t realise the limits and that I was slightly over. I thought it was one unit per drink, but it is not.

“It was a silly, silly mistake. I just want to apologise to the court, it will not happen again.”

The magistrate who sentenced Phillips said: “Not only did you put your life at risk, you were putting other people’s lives at risk too.

“Get a lift or get an Uber next time, don’t be tempted to get in your car.”

Phillips was banned from driving for 14 months, and will also have to pay at £400 fine and £125 costs.
